Traveling to The British Virgin Islands

Get ready to cross several items off the bucket list for the adventure of a lifetime in the charming British Virgin Islands! With so many amazing things to see and do, it is impossible to fit them all into one short week! Everything from snorkeling, hiking, scuba diving, and national parks; to concerts, nightlife, regatta races, and great food, this place really has it all!
Here are my own plans for a vacation to the BVI!

Splitting costs with 5 friends makes this somewhat expensive trip more doable. We will fly out from the Atlanta airport to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. A roundtrip ticket straight into the BVI costs over $800 whereas, an indirect flight with Delta costs $219 per person for a roundtrip economy ticket. Our flight will leave on April 24th at 8:15 and we will arrive in St. Thomas around 11:45am. We can likely expect to be greeted in the airport by friendly locals with free rum shots! Next, we will split a cab and head toward the ferry that will take us into the BVI. I will be bringing lots of Dramamine for motion sickness! After a 60 minute ferry ride we will arrive in Roadtown Harbor on Tortola. At this point we will take a quick trip through customs with a passport and proof of return flight, and we'll be free to explore the islands! Just as soon as we pick up our very own sail boat charter!

Cane Garden Bay, Tortola

Since Check-In isn't until 4 for our boat Charter, we will likely head for Cane Garden Bay for some sunshine, seafood, and a painkiller (cocktail) at Banana's Bar and Grill. After a couple hours of recharging on the beach, it's time to board our boat which is waiting fully stocked with supplies and ready for adventure. After an informative tour of how to man our sailing vessel and safety precautions, we will be sent off on our own to sail the crystal blue Caribbean waters.

Moorings 4800

For this trip I have booked a 44 ft. Sun Odyssey 439. The cost for one week rental (as per special offer in the off season) is $1,769, that's after taxes and discounted 35%. Split between 6 friends, that cost is $294.88 per person. A typical boat features 4 bedrooms with 4 hot showers, freshwater tank, a fully equipped and supplied kitchen, complete with stove, oven, fridge, freezer, microwave, coffee machine, toaster, and BBQ grill. Also a convenient dinghy for travel ashore while your ship stays in a harbour. Not bad for your own ship/house for a week, shared with friends!

Trail towards The Baths & Devil's Bay

With so many islands to visit and so little time, my Itinerary will be pretty lenient, with mainly a top list of attractions to see. Making time for whatever happens along the way. Top of the list is to head to Virgin Gorda. While our ship stays safely moored in the harbour, we are free to check out the restaurants and shops. In particular I would like to hike the trails to find the The Baths and Devil's Bay. The baths are natural granite slabs that form pools during low tide, they are open to swimming and hiking. I will have to bring my digital camera because there are no bad places to take a picture here!

Anegada Island

Caribbean Spiny Lobster

Next on my list would be to visit Anegada Island. This narrow piece of land is only 28 feet above sea level at its highest point but, it is the most beautiful and secluded of the islands. Here we can spend several hours walking along the pristine beaches, visiting the local shops, and when we get hungry, we can buy some fresh caught lobster at the waterfront Lobster Trap to bring back to our boat for dinner.

Anegada is also known as the "Drowned Island," as there are over 300 shipwrecks in its corral reefs. This makes it one of the best places for diving and a must see on my list. With no scuba shops on the island I will have to bring my own gear. Apparently, there are also hundreds of cow bones amongst the wreckage, making this place both eerie and beautiful.
